“The Elisabetta’s sortie aria is at the beginning of the first act, after the first chorus and the romanza of Sara. Elisabetta comes on the scene after fifteen bars of orchestral introduction in which it’s immediately drawn to her dual personality of queen and woman in love. […] The cabaletta masterfully translates the radiant expectation of Elisabetta about the return of Devereux (Essex), of which she’s in love.” (William Ashbrook)
